I designed the invitations for a dinner and drinks event in honor of Mickalene Thomas’s Hayward Gallery exhibition All About Love and her collaboration with Marfa Stance.
Artwork
The invitation design features a full-width image of the artist’s 2007 painting A Little Taste Outside of Love. Featuring the artist’s work so prominently on the invitation makes the design feel authentically Mickalene Thomas.
Colors
The invitation features a predominantly brown background. This background color was sampled directly from the skin color of the figure in A Little Taste Outside of Love. By using a color directly from the artwork, there is greater cohesion between the artwork and the rest of the invitation design.
Layout
This invitation is split into two sections: the top section, where the artwork is displayed, and the bottom section, where logistical information about the event is listed.
Typographic Hierarchy
The information in the lower section of the invitation is split into separate sections, distinguished by the type of content. The main information about the event, such as the date and time, appear in larger, bold font. The rest of the text, including background information about the event and exhibition, are set in smaller, regular-weight typography.
Colors
Three iterations of the invitation were originally designed, using three separate colors sampled from the artwork. The artist ultimately selected the brown as the color to be used in the final design.
Event
The dinner and drinks event referenced in the invitation took place on 02.08.25.
